And yes, it didn&#8217;t spend three times three days above 55C &#8211; more like three days and two days. There&#8217;s still more to learn here.<\/p>\n<p>Time to look at this and see what sort of microbial stuff is in it. I shook this up with about 20 times the amount of water and put a drop on a slide<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2305\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2305\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.richardmudhar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1507_hypha_DSCN2664_lzn.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2305\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.richardmudhar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1507_hypha_DSCN2664_lzn.jpg?resize=480%2C343\" alt=\"fungal hypah and bacteria\" width=\"480\" height=\"343\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">fungal hypha and bacteria<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to Elaine Ingham&#8217;s rules of thumb this is probably a good sort of soil fungus, because if the little round cocci are 1\u00b5m in diameter the fungal hypha is about 4\u00b5m. I could see that this one was slightly tan coloured, but the incandescent lamp of the microscope plays havoc with the white balance of the camera, making everything bright yellow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.richardmudhar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1507_hypha_DSCN2669_lzn.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2306\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.richardmudhar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1507_hypha_DSCN2669_lzn-550x413.jpg?resize=550%2C413\" alt=\"1507_hypha_DSCN2669_lzn\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.richardmudhar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1507_hypha_DSCN2669_lzn.jpg?resize=550%2C413&amp;ssl=1 550w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.richardmudhar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1507_hypha_DSCN2669_lzn.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.richardmudhar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1507_hypha_DSCN2669_lzn.jpg?resize=624%2C468&amp;ssl=1 624w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.richardmudhar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/1507_hypha_DSCN2669_lzn.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 85vw, 550px\" \/><\/a>This next one is narrow and clear, so not good in the morphology\u00a0 rule of thumb that fungi &lt; 3\u00b5m in diameter and clear are undesirable soil fungi.<\/p>\n<p>I saw no protozoa or micro-arthropods. That&#8217;s either because there aren&#8217;t any or because I didn&#8217;t recognise them.
